Controlling Costs in Your Divorce

For many divorcing couples, the process of ending a marriage can quickly become very expensive. This is especially true for divorces that drag on for months or even years before being finalized. Depending on the circumstances, expenses related to hiring an attorney may be among the highest, but there are many other considerations that could drive the costs of your divorce through the roof. Instead of trying to save money by skipping out on hiring an attorney—which is a dangerous proposition–there are some other options to consider.

Plan in Advance

A surprisingly large number of divorce cases begin with both spouses able to relatively civil to one another, at least until formal proceedings get underway. If you and your spouse recognize that a divorce is likely in store for your relationship, you can begin making tentative arrangements before either of you ever files. Remain calm and focused on the future, not the past. If you can make most of your divorce-related decisions at this stage, the remaining process will be much easier and less expensive.

Choose Your Battles

Exceedingly long divorces are usually the result of spouses who insist on fighting over every little detail, many of which are not all that important to their ultimate happiness. Of course, there are certain elements of your divorce that are truly worth fighting for—the well-being of your children, for example—but you can save a tremendous amount of time, energy, and money by being more flexible regarding the things that do not matter as much.

Set Reasonable Goals

Along with choosing your battles, you will need to decide what you hope to get from the divorce process. If closure and moving forward are most important to you, you are more likely to move through the proceedings faster and at less expense. This is not to suggest that you should forfeit any of your rights, but your happiness is most important. If you decide that it is more important to “win” and spite your soon-to-be-ex-spouse as much as possible, such an attitude is likely to drive up the final price tag.
